Unique Finds in Dewey Short Visitors Center

One of the most pristine lakes in Branson, Missouri is Table Rock Lake. The man-made lake was created in the 1950s by the US Army Corps of Engineers when the White River was dammed for flood control purposes. No one expected the creation of this beautiful lake just by creating a dam. And now, Table Rock Lake has been one of the most famous attractions in Branson, Missouri. Tourists from all over the world recognize this lake as one of the best places to go to experience amazing outdoors and exciting water activities. Thanks to the Table Rock Dam, the creation of this lake would not have been possible. There’s a fascinating story behind all of this and can be found out at Dewey Short Visitors Center! Get ready to be flooded by the dam’s history, fun and entertaining interactive displays, unique gifts, breathtaking views, and so much more!

The Dewey Short Visitors Center was named after Dewey Jackson Short, a Republican US Representative from Missouri’s 7th Congressional District and elected for a whopping twelve terms in office. He was one of the biggest advocates of the funding of the Table Rock Dam project and he was an avid supporter of the project. Thanks to US Representative Short, the construction of the dam did not take too long. It started in 1954 and was dedicated just after 5 years, 1959. The Dewey Short Center is located directly off Highway 165 next to the Table Rock Dam. It has the history of the dam as well as the vision and mission of Dewey Jackson Short inside. Today, visitors come here to learn more about the dam and also the lake that was simultaneously created with the dam.

Looking at the Dewey Short Visitors Center, you will see that it is a very distinct, modern-style building perched on the shores of Table Rock Lake. Its opening in April 2012 attracted locals and tourists and thus was recognized as the “crown jewel” of Table Rock Lake. There is an outdoor viewing deck that lets you set your eyes on the main channel of Table Rock Lake. You can also snap photos so that you would have something to remember! There are also a walking path and a small rock garden with a wooden bridge as the visitors center’s outside features. But there’s more in the inside!

Once you’re inside the Dewey Short Visitors Center, you will find a theater that holds a film about the dam to your left. Looking to your right, you will find The Discovery Shop, where you can buy all the unique Ozark gifts and souvenirs. It is one of the best Ozark gift shops in the city limits where you can find hats, t-shirts, and other fun Table Rock-Themed merchandises. Don’t forget to check out the shelves for bird books, field guides, local historical books, puzzles, science-centered games, and fun gadgets for little nature lovers like small clip-on compasses and bug catchers. Also, be sure to check the front desk for postcards that feature photos of the Dewey Short Visitors Center, maps and pamphlets for the Tri-Lakes and Branson Area.

You might be wondering where all the history about the Table Rock Lake and Dam can be found. Don’t panic because you will find all of the history you want downstairs of the Dewey Short Visitors Center! There are walls and murals, displaying the history of the dam. There is also a Native American artefact exhibit, educating visitors about the Indians that lived in the area. The White River is interactively displayed on a board downstairs, showing its length and what happens to it when rainfall causes the dam to be opened or closed. There are so many things that you will learn, even about the inner workings of a hydroelectric dam! Besides that, there is also another interactive exhibit, which will show you a lot of things and can even find out how much power it takes to hand crank enough electricity to and electric blender! Kids can learn about water safety and know the importance of wearing a life jacket and following safe water/boating procedures while in the lake area. Learn more about the lakeside wildlife through the wall to wall diorama room, showcasing the fishes, birds, and other critters at Table Rock Lake. With how the diorama is painted, you will definitely feel that you are in an actual wildlife location!

Food and Fun at the Dixie Stampede

dixie-stampede-riderThere are loads of opportunities to have fun in Branson, and just as many opportunities to have some great food as well. Silver Dollar City or White Water are legendary around the world for their fun factors, for example, and there is great food to be had at restaurants like the White River Fish House and The Keeter Center at College of the Ozarks. But what if you are looking for great food AND great fun at the same time? You are in luck – because Branson, Missouri, is home to Dixie Stampede!

If you have driven down Highway 76 (known around town as The Strip), chances are that you have seen the huge theater designed to resemble a Southern mansion. This eye-catching theater is the home of Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede, one of Branson’s most popular shows! In fact, Dolly Parton has been known to say, “It’s the most fun place to eat in Branson – I guarantee it!”

In an era where dinner theater is nowhere near as popular as it once was, Dolly Parton has brought it back in the form of her Dixie Stampede show in both Branson and Pigeon Forge. Dolly owns the show, and World Choice Investments LLC manages it. This company is a joint business venture between The Dollywood Company, Fred Hardwick, and Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation, a name that is well known around Branson! The first Dixie Stampede Show opened in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in 1988, not far from where Dollywood is located. The Branson location of the show made its debut and opened to the public in 1995.

The Dixie Stampede show starts with all the guests being seated in a ‘Carriage Room,’ where an opening act is performed. This can be anything from acrobatics to juggling to singing to playing music and dancing – you never know what you might get! After this act, guests then file into the main theater for a Wild West performance featuring 32 beautiful horses and their riders that will wow you with tricks like Roman Riding and jumping through a fiery hoop! There will also be music, dancing, and some friendly ‘North and South’ competition that encourages audience participation.

And don’t forget the food! This is dinner theater, after all. You get an amazing five-course meal along with the show! The meal, which is made fresh on site for each and every show, consists of a whole rotisserie chicken, hickory smoked barbecue pork loin, creamy vegetable soup, homemade biscuit, corn on the cob, herb-basted baked potato, an iced apple turnover, and Pepsi products, tea, or coffee. The vegetarian option is identical, except that the meats are replaced with 'Country Garden Hillbilly Pasta'. And here is where the food gets fun – there are no dining utensils, so you have to eat with your fingers! Dixie Stampede is the whole package – great food and great fun, all at an affordable price and conveniently located in Branson. So the next time you are wondering where to get some fun with your food (or vice versa!), look no farther than Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede!

Shepherd of the Hills: A Must-Visit Spot in Branson

When Harold Bell Wright went to Missouri, he was inspired by the beauty of the Ozark Mountains. He wrote a book entitled “Shepherd of the Hills” and this was what put Missouri on the map. Today, Shepherd of the Hills does not only pertain to the book written by Wright but also to the place in Branson, Missouri. Shepherd of the Hills has gathered its fame through the years.

The Shepherd of the Hills did not start as how most people think; its history started with an ill minister, great flooding of the White River, a beautiful homestead, and a book – all wrapped by the culture of the Ozark Mountains.

In 1986, Harold Bell Wright, an ill minister suffering from consumption from Kansas, arrived in the area of the Ozark Mountains seeking a better climate condition for his health. He was amazed by the beauty of the place. But due to the great flooding of the White River, he temporarily transferred to the homestead of the couple, John and Anna Ross, which was bought during the 1800’s. He set up a campsite and through the years was immersed in the people and the rich culture of the Ozarks, which inspired his book, Shepherd of the Hills. The book was published in 1907 and became a hit. This drew dozens of visitor’s to the Ross’s Ozarks homestead and started the fame of the place.

In 1910, the Ross’s sold their homestead to and M.R. Driver, who then turned the homestead into an inn where tourists could stay and dine. It gathered more attention and made the place more famous. Because of this, the area started to change and was transformed into a tourist destination. The tourist destination had theaters as one of its biggest draws as a Ms McDaniel began re-enacting plays of the Shepherd of the Hills book in the 1920’s. And during the 1960’s, the theater business was already booming. More shows and attractions were added in the 1970’s. In 1989, a 230-foot tower on the exact site of Harold Bell Wright’s first campground to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the writer’s first visit. The tower is known as the Inspiration Tower and its location is known as the Inspiration Point. The place was getting more and more famous each year, attracting thousands of tourists to the area.

Today, the Shepherd of the Hills still is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Branson, Missouri. One of the most popular features it has is the nightly show Outdoor Drama, which is an epic story of love, tragedy, and redemption in the Ozarks. The Inspiration Towers still continues to inspire people with the view it comes with. People in search for good food and good music go to The Sons of the Pioneers Chuckwagon Dinner Show, which features Grammy Hall of Fame performers and an authentic chuckwagon meal. And for some adventure, there is a horseback trail ride through the 160-acre homestead that started it all and the Vigilante Extreme Ziprider. During the holidays, the Shepherd of the Hills invite tourists to drive through the trail of lights, which is one of the longest and most festive Christmas light displays in the Ozarks.

Whatever time of the year it is, the Shepherd of the Hills never fail to give tourists a great experience! For more information about the Shepherd of the Hills, please visit www.theshepherdofthehills.com.
