A Whole New Experience in Dewey Short Visitors Center

Branson Missouri, aside from being well-known for its live music shows and theaters, has also gained lots of loyal tourists because of its magnificent outdoors. One thing in particular is the TriLakes Area in Branson. The TriLakes Area is a collection of three beautiful lakes, one of which is the man-made lake Table Rock Lake. Made for flood control purposes, Table Rock Lake has become more than just that. It also offers water activities for the tourists, and it also became the site where one of Branson’s biggest shopping centers rose – the Dewey Short Visitors Center.

Dewey Short Visitors Center is located directly off of Highway 156. This place is named after Congressman Dewey Jackson Short who was the biggest supporter of the Table Rock Dam. When you visit Dewey Short Visitors Center, you can still learn more about the Congressman and his vision. You can find the building perched on the shores of the lake. Since its opening in April 2012, the Dewey Short Visitors center has been known as the “crown jewel” of Table Rock Lake. There is an outdoor viewing deck, walking path, and a small rock garden with a wooden bridge. Inside the Visitors center, you can find a theater and The Discovery Shop, which is also one of the unique gift shops in Ozarks. Here you can find jewelries, wood carvings, hats, shirts, Table Rock themed items, puzzles, books, postcards, and a lot more. This is the best place to shop for souvenir items for yourself and for your loved ones back home.

On the first floor of the Dewey Short Visitors Center, you can find a history of the dam in the wall murals and displays. You can also learn more about the Indians who once lived in the area through the Native American artifact exhibit. A quick lesson about how the dam works can also be found here. Not only that, the displays are also a delight to those who love the aquatic life. You can see fishes, birds and others that you can possibly spot in Table Rock Lake. After all these, try being in the viewing deck to take great photos of the Table Rock Dam.

Dewey Short Visitors Center is certainly a must-visit place. For your Branson visit, make sure you stay in a convenient and comfortable place. Stay in Thousand Hills Hotel and Golf Resort where you get to choose from log cabins, golf homes, and lake condos. Thousand Hills will complete your Branson experience. It doesn’t hurt, too, that it is located close to Branson’s entertainment District and Dewey Visitors Center. Reserve a unit now by calling 1-877-262-0430.

Gone Fishing in Branson

Branson, Missouri, is known for a lot of things. The town is known for being called the ‘Live Entertainment Capital of the Midwest,’ for example. Most folks are aware that Branson got its start as a tourism town from the book, ‘The Shepherd of the Hills’ by Harold Bell Wright. Lots of people also know that there is a world famous theme park (Silver Dollar City) with world famous thrill rides (think Outlaw Run!) in Branson. And Branson is also known for bluegrass, great shopping, and super fun attractions like The Promised Land Zoo and Ride the Ducks. But one thing that makes Branson really stand out is the fishing – and with three area lakes, the fish are always biting somewhere! Read on for some information you’ll want to remember when you’re fishing in Branson.

Fishermen Below Table Rock DamLocation: Branson is part of what’s known as the ‘Tri-Lakes’ area. That is because there are three great fishing lakes around town, all with different fish and scenery awaiting your inner outdoorsman (or woman!). The most well-known lake for going fishing in Branson is Table Rock Lake, named for a large rock formation that resembles – can you guess? – a table about a mile or so from the famous Table Rock Dam. The dam was constructed in the 1950s as a mean of flood control along the White River. Over the years, Table Rock has become a popular lake for bass fishing tournaments. The next lake in the Branson area is Lake Taneycomo (short for Taney County Missouri). This much colder neighbor of Table Rock has some beautiful scenery and hiking trails bordering its shores; Taneycomo is a real hotspot for trout fishing. And last but not least is Bull Shoals Lake. Bull Shoals is dotted with coves that make for great places to reel in bass, catfish, crappie, and bream.

Equipment: Every fisherman has his preferred style, size, and brand of fishing equipment – but just about everybody who casts a hook into the water can agree on the basic necessities of fishing. Like a fishing pole, of course! Your pole will need to be equipped with a reel and fishing line. It’s always a good practice to bring a fishing net too. Then you will require some smaller items like hooks, sinkers and bobbers. It is helpful to have a tackle box to store these items in, so that loose tools don’t fall into the water. Pliers and scissors are good additions to your tackle box, as is some sunscreen and water bottles! Of course, you can’t catch fish without bait. This can be as simple as digging for some worms, or as complex as fishing with a bass rig or a rooster tail lure. The possibilities are endless!

Safety: Fishing in Branson is a lot of fun and a great way to make memories – but you need to remember some basic safety rules too. It is a good practice (especially when fishing with kids) to wear a life jacket around the water – and if you are fishing off of a boat, you MUST wear a life jacket; it is required by Missouri law. Always be mindful of where you cast – check behind you before bringing back your pole to throw your hook in. Many fishing trips have been ruined by lack of observation and people getting stabbed with sharp hooks. Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen while fishing – and of course, have fun! Because that’s what fishing in Branson is all about.

Copper Run Distillery

Server at Copper Run DistilleryThere are a lot of tastes that are unique to the Ozarks – like fried fish, for example, or funnel cakes from Silver Dollar City. But how about the taste of real moonshine? There are many stories of moonshine stills being hidden in the hills and hollers of the Ozarks in days of old, when law enforcement would try and outsmart the native people who were making and running shine. These days, though, making and being in possession of moonshine isn’t a crime as long as it’s from a legal still – and Copper Run Distillery is known to have the best tasting shine around!

Copper Run Distillery, located in Walnut Shade, Missouri (just a few minutes off of Highway 65 and about 15 minutes from Branson), is an artisan distillery that brews small, handcrafted batches of Ozark Mountain Moonshine, whiskey, and rum. Copper Run is owned by Jim Blansit and Aris Aristidou. Jim is also the Master Distiller at Copper Run. The distillery is open daily from 11am to 7pm, and tours are offered at 12, 2, 4 and 6pm. The tours give visitors a chance to admire the beautiful rustic facility, with a bar, lounge and open air patio upstairs, and the actual distillery downstairs. Tours include sampling of the unforgettable Copper Run spirits! The lounge at Copper Run often features live music, and can also be booked for any special occasion.

The spirits at Copper Run Distillery include: Overproof Ozark Mountain Moonshine (distilled from separate batches of corn, wheat and barley, this 120 proof crystal clear white whiskey is truly an Ozarks experience!), Ozark Mountain Moonshine (this spirit is un-aged and comes straight from the still, just like the moonshiners of old would have made it), Hopped Wheat Whiskey (this is a limited edition spirit, aged for two years in Missouri Oak barrels), Small Batch Spirit Whiskey (with hints of vanilla and caramel flavors), White Rum (made from brown sugar and blackstrap molasses and great in cocktails!) and Island Gold Rum (a robust rum with hints of raisin flavor).

Copper Run Distillery crafts their spirits using techniques that are literally thousands of years old – a 140 gallon direct fire copper pot is what they refer to as the ‘centerpiece’ of their operation. Copper Run also likes to keep their equipment local - the barrels that age the spirits are handcrafted from young Missouri oak trees, and the water comes from the property’s well. Using hard work and time honored tradition, Copper Run Distillery continues to handcraft one of a kind spirits that are truly an experience!

The moonshine, whiskey and rum made by this local artisan distillery can be purchased from Copper Run itself, or can be ordered online at www.copperrundistillery.com. Copper Run Distillery also has a booth at the Saturday Farmers Market of the Ozarks, located in Springfield, Missouri on Republic Road, where they offer tasting samples and Moonshine Bloody Marys!

For a taste that is truly unique to the Ozarks, check out Copper Run Distillery during your next Branson visit – it will be an experience to remember!

The National Tiger Sanctuary

The Ozarks are home to a lot of really neat animals – like whitetail deer, or black bears, for example. These rugged hills are full of things like turkeys, eagles, foxes, squirrels, songbirds, minks, turtles, rabbits and…tigers? That’s right; there are real live tigers here in the Ozarks! And the best part is that you and your family can visit them at The National Tiger Sanctuary near Branson, Missouri. Get ready to meet some of the coolest critters in the Ozarks – this is one attraction you really won’t want to miss.

White Tiger at the National Tiger SanctuaryThe National Tiger Sanctuary is located about twenty minutes from Branson in Chestnutridge, Missouri, just a short drive off of Highway 65. Here you will find some of the world’s most beautiful big cats, living in a natural, outdoor environment. The National Tiger Sanctuary is a non-profit organization operating under the Global Resources for Environmental Education and Nature. The sanctuary was established in 2000 with the goal of creating a safe and protected environment to connect with the diversity of creation. This impressive facility, inspected annually by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and the Missouri Department of Conservation to ensure the well-being of both the animals and the visitors, was built entirely with private funding from individuals and membership support. The National Tiger Sanctuary hosts interns from all across the globe through their internship program, creating a place of learning and experience through their big cats.

The National Tiger Sanctuary is currently home to more than twenty exotic cats, as well as several domestic felines (and dogs!). One of these exotic beauties is Jaycee, a white tiger who was rescued from smugglers in Texas, and then obtained by NTS from the Gladys Porter Zoo, along with another white tiger named Tigger. Another NTS resident is a big Bengal tiger named Max – he is a classic orange and black striped tiger that most people picture when they think of these big cats! Niara is one of several African Lionesses that calls NTS home, along with Leo, a thick maned African Lion. NTS is also proud to be the caretakers of a cougar, panthers, and numerous other cats!

NTS is open Wednesday through Sunday, and guided tours are offered at 10am, 1pm and 3pm. They also offer multiple tour options: The Awareness Tour (where visitors can meet the cats and learn about their personalities), The Feeding Tour (where visitors can not only meet the cats but watch them being fed), The You Feed Tour (where you can feed the big cats yourself!) and The Behind The Scenes Tour (where visitors can get a behind the scenes look at animal care and food preparation, including feeding the big cats.) The only tour requiring reservations is the Behind The Scenes Tour. NTS also has options for birthday parties, weddings, field trips and group discount rates!

The National Tiger Sanctuary is a great place for learning about not only big cats, but also about conservation and caring for one’s environment. Don’t miss visiting NTS during your time in Branson!
