Shepherd of The Hills ![]() Shepherd of the Hills is the story that put Branson on the map and is one of the main reasons people visit today.
Shepherd of the Hills was a novel released in 1907 telling a story of the Ozarks and describing the area and its people. Harold Bell Wright, the author of Shepherd of the Hills, starting coming to Branson in 1898 where he was allowed to pitch a tent on the property of John and Anna Ross. His tent is the location of what is now called Inspiration Point due to the wonderful views of the rolling Ozarks. Shepherd of the Hills has been translated into seven different languages and has been produced in Hollywood four different times. John Wayne starred in the first Technicolor version.
The first nightly plays of Shepherd of the Hills were performed in the 1950’s in what is now called The Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Theatre. The show has been a steady hit and is performed nightly from May to October just down the hill from the cabin that the Rosses lived in. Shepherd of the Hills is an enjoyable experience for the whole family.
