Spending the Day in Eureka Springs

Branson, Missouri, is a wonderful gateway to the Ozarks.  It features some of the country’s most beautiful and rugged scenery, interesting people and unique activities – and did you know, there are lots of other great places in the Ozarks to visit that are within a day of Branson?  Like Eureka Springs, Arkansas, for example!

Eureka Springs, Arkansas, was founded one July 4, 1879.  Named after the many unique and beautiful springs around town (many of which were rumored to have healing powers!), Eureka Springs has a long and interesting history – like being home to a Civil War Hospital, and abolitionist Carry Nation, witnessing the capture of a famous outlaw, and more.  Today, the downtown area has kept its historical charm, while offering visitors plenty of modern flair.  Many antique homes and cottages have been transformed into colorful bed and breakfasts, and old hotels have been renovated for guests, spas and restaurants, and the shops are full of unique art created by local artisans.  No matter what time of year it is, you won’t want to miss a visit to Eureka Springs!

Stay:  Downtown Eureka Spring offers visitors a multitude of places to stay – such as the 1905 Basin Park Hotel.  This seven-story lodging has been beautifully preserved and makes for a great stay in town.  And don’t worry, it features all the modern amenities  – including King Suites upon request!   The central location of the Basin Park Hotel makes walking around downtown Eureka Springs and window-shopping a breeze – the hotel also features a private parking lot for guests to leave their vehicles in.  A beautiful plaza area, complete with a fountain, amphitheater, and a walking path to one of the springs is situated next to the hotel.  Other unique hotels around town include the Crescent Hotel and Spa, the Palace Hotel and Bath House and the Grand Central Hotel.

Dine:  Eureka Springs is full of fabulous restaurants and eateries that offer a wide range of flavors.  Many of the area hotels feature restaurants that are open to the public; Grand Taverne at The Grand Central Hotel is one of these.  Featuring a French inspired menu and bottomless fresh baked bread, you certainly won’t leave the Grand Taverne hungry!  Duck in blueberry sauce, pasta with chicken, oyster mushrooms and prosciutto in cream sauce, and prime rib are just a few of the beautifully prepared dishes that are created here, and served with excellent service.  Don’t forget to check out the drink and dessert menu!

Local Flavor Café makes a delicious stop for lunch or dinner.  Their open, airy restaurant is popular at any time of the year!  You’ll find tasty sandwiches, freshly made mango salsa, pork tenderloin and more on their menu.

Explore:  There are no shortage of shops and art galleries to wander in the downtown area.  But if you want to get out of town, head seven miles south to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge!   This outstanding refuge recues abandoned, abused or unwanted big cats (and a few other critters too!) and gives them a lifelong home, with the compassionate care the animals deserve.  Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge houses the big cats and other animals in natural settings, on grass, and provides shelter, food, water and enrichment.  The facility is open to the public, and offers tours, lodging and a gift shop.

If hiking is more your exploration style, there are plenty of beautiful springs within walking distance of most hotels, or you can venture out a little farther to Lake Leatherwood Park!  This wooded nature area features a 4-½ mile hiking trail that goes all the way around the lake, and includes a scenic stop at the dam.

Whether you want a day trip or a weekend stay, Eureka Springs is your perfect getaway any time of year!
