This 1880’s themed amusement park will give you thrills and excitement. But let us get to know more about the history of Silver Dollar City.

Silver Dollar City would not have existed if not for the Herschend Family. The Herschend Family of Hugo and Mary, together with their sons Jack and Pete, vacationed in the Ozarks and they fell in love with the rich heritage of the area. It was in 1951 when the Herschends moved into the Ozarks and Hugo Herschend got a long term lease of Marvel Cave. After Hugo passed away in 1955, Mary and her sons continued his work in improving the cave by giving it electricity, walkways, and a cable train to take the guests up and out of the cave for tours. Marvel Cave became more and more popular, and it continued to draw in more tourists. Soon, a small replica frontier town was built just outside the cave entrance to give visitors something to enjoy while they waited in line for the Marvel Cave tour. This town was name Silver Dollar City, and a silver dollar was handed to the guests for them to spend and tell other people where that silver dollar came. Word had spread fast, and soon, the Herschends were in the theme park business and Silver Dollar City was in existence.

At present, the Herschend family owns 26 theme park enterprises in ten different states. These include Dollywood, The Harlem Globetrotters, Adventure Aquarium, Dixie Stampede, White Water, and Silver Dollar City. From handing out silver dollars, Silver Dollar City has come a long way. Now, it treats the guests to rides like the record-breaking Outlaw Run, and unique ones such as Wildfire and Powder Keg. Silver Dollar City also has theaters where guests can catch more than 40 shows per day to give them a breather from all the thrills in the park.
